A LONG TIME AGO; IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY...

PROLOGUE

Nine years ago, on Korriban... final year of Criassa's training at the Academy, in the tomb of Marka Ragnos...

She felt blood in her eyes, as her head batered across the hard stone floor of the crypt, landing in a heap there, after a large piece of broken off stone ceiling slammed in-to her side, by a aplication of force telekinesis from her most hated rival.

"Half-breed slave filth. You wil get no further then this, I promise you that! This time, the overseer isnt around to save you from my blade! I wil be the one to win Darth Ravage's favor!" his voice, driping with malice, came from the inky shadows behind her. The voice rezolved in-to a tall robed shape of a male apprentice, of pureblood Sith species. He had a training vibrosword in his right hand, twirling it menacingly, as he aproached the wired, yet shapely teenage girl's crumpled form on the ground.

Her eyes flashed, as she licked the blood off her lips. "Your assuming I need saving, Melkor. Slow to catch on, as alvays." Then she lightly kipped-up, back on her feet in one smooth motion, wiping her eyes of blood, her own blade coming out of her back-scabbard, and in-to her left hand.

She smiled, biting her lower lip, looking at him like a piece of meat that he was, rather... her gaze focusig just below his robe's waist. In the time here, the two of them had a sort of... adversarial fuck/rape relationship... going on, in the time that they werent trying to kill/outmaneuver each other, like all students wer expected to.

"You did taste good, thogh. Too bad your in my way now. You can still back off."

The Sith's reddish face twisted. Not replying, he charged her, gliding soundlesly across the stone floor, vith astonishing speed, aided by the Force. His blade slashed upwards at her neck, in a reverse-slice. She parryed it, then landed a hammer-kick to his sternum, pushing him away, then folowing-thru with a overhead slice at the top of his head. He leapt aside, making her slash hit the floor vith a metalic clang, then pivoted on one leg, adding momentum to the high-chop kick to her temple. She ducked, taking it as a graze acros the top of her head, at the same time as she reversed the grip on her sword, and plunged it in-to his side, as he was ending his pivot motion. He left himself way too exposed during it. At the last moment, he managed to inter-poze his blade to deflect her stab, but it still grazed deeply on his chest. He staggered back vith a sharp intake of breth, bringing his blade to a high guard. But Criassa folowed up, vith her own Force telekinetic burst to shove him away, to slam in-to the wall. He reciprocated vith another piece of chipped ceiling flying toward her head, vhich she batted out vith a slice of her sword, only small chips of it showering her face. She charged at him. He charged back at her. She slashed low at his legs, ducking. He leapt up, dodging, then landed behind her back. He spinned around, chopping at her neck vith his elbow. It conected, dropping her to the ground vith a black haze in her head, almost knocked out. Thru the haze, she saw his blade coming down at her torso. She rolled asyde, the strike landing next to her vith another metal clang. He folowed her roll, winding up for another swing. This time, she blocked it vhile still down, then lashed out vith a kick at his leading kneecap, felt a crack there. He staggerd back, giving her space to get back to her feet again, shaking off the daze. He roared in pain and rage, and a two-handed slash at her chest vith his sword, vith all his might. She angled it diagonally, leting the power-slash slide along her own blade's length, robbing it of momentum and deflecting it, before she pivoted, vith a quick axe-kick chop at his outstreched hands holding his blade. His momentum vorking against him, he culd not guard in time. His elbow joints jarred hard by the kick, he dropped his sword. His eyes barely had time to show his dizmay, before her sword plunged thru his chest, and heart. She retracted her stab, and he vent down on his knees, then flopped to his back, dead, vith a gurgled gasp, and blood coming out of his mouth.

"Too bad. I did almost like you." she muttered, sheathing her blade, stil fighting some daze, her neck sore as fuck, as she bent down to search the cooling corpse. There. A ancient tablet vith writings from a milennia ago! At least it wuld save her from trudging thru this crypt any longer, in search of her own, to bring back to the overseer and complete her final trial.

PEACE IS A LIE; THERE IS ONLY PASSION

THRU PASSION, I GAIN STRENGTH

THRU STRENGTH, I GAIN POWER

THRU POWER, I GAIN VICTORY

THRU VICTORY, MY CHAINS ARE BROKEN

THE FORCE SHAL FREE ME

CORUSCANT; PRESENT DAY

[float=left][/float]

[float=left][/float] The sky stil awash in crimson flames, of Republic and Sith fighters flying over-head, exchanging laser fire, dueling capital ships in the heights above the planetary shield, explosions, and the pandemonium in the streets below, it vas all Lady Criassa culd do, not to get swalowed in the chaos. She climbed the outer access-way of the Jedi Temple, and vas on her way to the council chamber rooms, after fighting it out with the other Sith agenst the Jedi defenders in the main hall. Darth Malgus and the rest had the situation down there wel in hand, having the Jedi knights and the few surviving Republic troops on the back foot, helped out by his hired Mandalorian commandos.

She did enconter some rezistance, in the form of stragglers from the Republic defense garrison, and a cople of teenage Jedi padawans, but against a Sith Lord like her, they had no chance. There dismembered corpses barely slowed her down along the way, as she reached the top-level promenade around the council chambers. Using her lightsaber, she cut thru the doors, and vent in, cursing under her breth, as a stray laser bolt from the dogfighting fighters around the temple slammed very close to the doorway she just passed thru, and gouged out a piece of the wall. Yes... it vas definitly safer insyde.

The blueish-yellow lighting playing shadows acros her body-painted alluring features, giving her violet-shaded skin a slight green aspect, the lithe half-Zeltron woman glided thru the polished hallways toward the council room. Streching thru the Force, she culd sense no Jedi Masters there at the moment. No suprise, they were all probably having there hands full down below, or else-where on the planet co-ordinating the defense. She liked it that way. Vhile never averse to a good fight, she knew her limits, and facing a full Jedi Master in single combat vasnt very high on her list of things to do here. Besides, she never did like fair fights... trained as a sith assassin, her talents lied in surprise and quick ambush.

Council chamber doors... locked. But as her blade touched them, a flash of electric discharge spread across them, too, sending a sharp jolt in-to her hands, and almost making her drop her saber. Not just locked, but electromagneticly-sealed! Geting in vas impossible, even with a lightsaber. Nothing short of a hi-yield shaped charge wuld do it, or possibly a massive exertion of Force telekinesis to breach thru it, vhich was still beyond her abilitys and Force atunement level.

"Blast it! Maybe Ravage himself culd do it, but I don think I can..." she hissed irritably, leting her blade die down, as she rubbed her hand as she glared at the doors. She closed her eyes, focused, and gave it her best shot at breaking thru them, with a Force kinetic wave... but the doors didnt even dent in-ward. Looked like the Jedi wer covering all corners up here. Ok, so the council room was out. But she had her instructions from her master, Darth Ravage. She had to find a very specific Jedi holocron, and deliver it to him, that he known vas kept somewhere in the Jedi temple. The raid on Coruscant vas a perfect opportunity for it. Problem was... he had no idea exacly where vas it kept, and the Jedi temple turned out to be a pretty big place. Her first guess vas that the council room computer wuld have a listing of all artifacts kept on the premises. But now, that vas impossible to reach.

Wel, there wer other options... the Temple library archives, in the sub basement. Criassa turned, and retraced her steps to the main hall-way, then looked at the floor map for the turbolifts down. She avoided the main cluster, and headed for the maintenance cluster, vhich she hoped had a direct lift line to the sub-basement areas. The last thing she wanted vas to run in-to more enemies using the turbolifts to converge on the main chamber, vhere the battle was stil raging.

The maintenance turbolift doors vere at the end of a long corridor. Just as she steped in-to the alcove before them, a security system went-off, and a ceiling turret lowered from its hiding place in the ceiling above, sending a hi-powered shot down at her. The Force warned her in-advance, and the shot reflected off her sudenly-ignited blade, to zing in-to the wall. The turret didnt get a second chance to fire, as she zapped it with a discharge of lightning bolts from her left hand. It crackled, and depowered, disabled.

Doors sealed, but not mag-sealed this time, and her lightsaber had no problem cutting thru. She entered the lift, and glanced across the control panel... yes! There was a direct route to the sub-basement and the library areas. Tapping the control, her face spread in-to a satisfyed smile.

[float=right][/float] PROLOGUE

Twenty years ago, Coruscant, Jedi Temple

Sak Mundulud hit the ground panting, his green skin wet against the padding. His breath left in a rush, four hearts beating a frenzied pace, but as much as he wanted to lay still he couldn't. The Nautolan pushed against the ground beneath him with both his arms and the force, launching himself to the side just before the shock stick slapped down against the space he has just left. The electricity crackled as it touched the moisture, vaporizing it into steam even as Sak reached out his arm, his own shock stick flying across the room and back into his hand. The entire left side of his face was turning purple, the bruise breaking wider and deeper than it would have in a human, but he didn't let the pain bother him... narrowing his focus down to nothing but the force and the man in front of him.

The Nautolan youngling had fought on this training pad dozens of time, but his opponent today was no youngling... the human was twice his size, and wore the robes of a full fledged Jedi Knight. The pale skinned man, his face completely devoid of the perspiration that was coating Sak, seemingly didn't seem tired at all by the nearly twenty minute bout... a fight that had been decidedly one sided despite his inability to finish it. Sak knew he was the best of the younglings with the blade... a fact that he was proud of even though he knew he shouldn't be, but the Jedi before him was at least twice his age and far, far more experienced. He wasn't sure why Master Krynda Dray had brought him here to fight the older man, where the rest of the younglings were, or who the Jedi was... he only knew that he had to win, had to defeat the older man.

The Jedi Knight moved forward in a rush, the electrical baton blurring as it struck out four times in the space of a heartbeat. Sak parried on reflex, his thoughts vanishing as he fell into the fight, felt the force flow through him as it guided his hands. One parry... his arms were less strong than the Knights, even with the force augmenting him he needed to take a step back to keep the shock stick from finding his shoulder. Second parry... unable to step back again, he needed to push it to the side. Repost... with all of his weight on the back foot, Sak kicked out with his front. The Jedi Knight caught it on his upper thigh before it gained any momentum, using the block to shove backwards, knocking the youngling to the ground. Third parry, the shock stick directed in a swipe at his side as he lay on his back. Sak caught it, directing it close enough to the Jedi Knight's leg that he needed to take a step backwards and abort the swing, buying him a split second to turn the fall into a tumble, coming up in a crouch just as the fourth cut came in...

This time, the parry just wasn't good enough, and he knew it. Instead, he dropped his shock stick and held up both hands in a force push, holding the Jedi Knight's swing at bay. For a moment, he dared to hope he could hold the older Jedi at bay, freeze him in place... but then he let out his breath in a huff of exhaustion and the concentration needed to maintain the telekenesis failed. The shock stick impacted his hip with a burning stab of electricity that made his entire body go rigid before he collapsed to the ground, huffing.

Almost immediately he was trying to get back to his feet, but his muscles just weren't responding. The shock, plus the exhaustion of the long fight and the injuries of a dozen bruises made his muscles give out not once, but twice, collapsing him back down to the group. The will was there... but the body wasn't ready.

From the side where Jedi Master Krynda Dray stood, there came a clapping noise. There was another man there standing behind the female Jedi Master, a Rodian... his own skin an even more vibrant shade of green than his own. Sak hadn't seen the man arrive, and had never seen him before, but somewhere deep inside, he knew that something truly important had just happened. "He'll do," the Rodian said with a slime on his reptilian face. "Thank you Rhaegis, Master," said Jedi Knight Sorto Taldan as he looked on the Nautolan who would become his apprentice. "I'll see the boy now..."

*************************************************************************************************

CORUSCANT, PRESENT

The green light of Sak Mundulud's lightsaber died with a snap-hiss as he killed the blade, turning his skin nearly black in the emergency red lighting of the city. The sith infiltrator lay dead before him, his pale skin and black tattoos looking like blood beneath crimson pall of the dim lights. This agent had been low ranking, barely more than an amateur... no Jedi would have sent a man this inexperienced into the middle of a war, but the cruel Sith did things differently... the way they saw it, if he lived, it would be because he was strong, and therefor worthy.

"Bastards," Sak hissed as he turned away from the Sith he had killed. The city streets beneath the temple were in ruins, battered by a barrage from above, but they were the only way to make it back to the Jedi Temple at the moment... trying to make your way by hovercar or on the surface was suicide in the raging battle. Not for the first time in the last hour, day, week, or month, he wished Sorto was here, and cursed the Sith for taking the man away from him. All he knew was Jedi Master Krynda Dray had put out a distress call to all of the shadows, warning of Sith infiltrators within the temple and calling every surviving Shadow to make their way back to the temple... and he was the closest. Attaching his lightsaber back to his belt, the Jedi Shadow turned to run through the tangled wreckage, leaping from one stable point to the next, trusting the force to guide his actions... living as completely within the moment as he could...

Like sinking in-to the bowls of a beast, the lift just kept descenting. As she waited, Criassa passed the time by a few mental exercizes, as wel as kept her mind focused out-ward, thru the Force, alert for any dangers, or premoniton of arrival at the library floor, in the sub basement.

Nothing vas close enogh for the Force to alert her to any danger, although she vas picking up alot of emotional curents from all around, thru the walls and ceilings of the massive temple. At one point, she assumed vhen the lift's route passed the main atrium floors, she culd sense a storm of conflicting emotions, spreading like a groundfog. Anxiety, fear, rage, anticipation... it seemed the battle vas stil going on, and the Jedi and there Republic minions wer stil putting up a fierce rezistance. That suited her purpose. As long as they had the big fight to wory about, there vas less chance of any of them prowling thru other areas vhere they might run in-to her, and obstruct her own task.

At last the lift stoped, and the doors hissed-open. Obscuring her-self thru the Force, Criassa sliped out of the car, invisible, this time more careful then before, anticipating more automated security down there vhich she did not want to trigger, if at all posible. She culd not keep herself that way for long, unlike true masters of Force illusion, but she culd maintain it for 30 seconds at a time, or so. Enough time to scout the imediate area around the library section, and plan her aproach.

Her force sight showed her more, how-ever. Laser tripwires cris-crossing the floor of the acces halway, invizible to the naked eye, but obvius as a lightning bolt to her. Energy concentrations at few points in the ceiling... likely concealed turets, that wuld trigger if she triped one of the lasers. And grates, spaced periodicly along the walls. Knockout gas? Posibly. And a concealed securicam, imbeded in the wall on the far side of the coridor, keeping a eye on it all. Lucky for her she had the fore-sight to obscure herself.

Light on her feet, the lithe Zeltron woman maked the most of her grace and agility, to dodge the lasers, rolling under them, hopping over them, side-steping them. Even so, she cut it very close... her Force effort at obscuring herself vas about to fail, as she cleared the coridor, a little light-headed from the strain the effort put on her mental focus. She shaked her head to clear it.

"Lets hope I wont have to backtrack the same way, vhen I'l be slowed-down by the holocron..." she thoght, sligtly unnerved. Security vas formidable.

The acces coridor branched in two, by a T inter-section. Both ends led to a identical set of doors. She tryed one... sealed. Hovering the palm of her hand just above the door's surface, to feel for any currents, Criassa vas happy to discover these doors wer not magneticly-sealed, however. Activating her lightsaber, she started cutting thru them.

No telling vhat awaited her on the other side, thogh. Vith her mental focus drained by the taxing effort at concealment, Criassa vas pretty much blind thru the Force, for the next few minutes, until she recovered some of her mental eqvilibrium. If the Jedi left anyone down here to guard the library archives, she wuld not know about them until she cut thru these doors.

Sak stared in horror as he looked on the slaughter... but his eyes could not see beyond the cut down body of Jedi Master Krynda Dray. The older human woman had the kind of beauty that most women wouldn't know to envy... a kind of bone deep strength and grace that did not fade with age, giving beauty that would last a lifetime, a quiet sense of purpose, power, authority, and compassion that inspired all who look on her. The Jedi master was the one who had chosen him as a Shadow... the last member of the Jedi order he he trusted completely, and the last one to know that he was a Shadow at all, and not dead in truth.

And now she, like his master, was gone.

The Nautulan jedi shook his head, a learned human gesture. He could not worry about that, not now. Master Dray had been slain by a lightsaber, as had half a dozen other Jedi here. The sith infiltrators in the temple were no longer a theory... they were fact, and that gave him important purpose. By what he knew, the Jedi were slowing winning the battle on the surface and in space... too slowly, but they would eventually kick the sith off the world. Then they would retake the temple and kill every last one of these murdering fuckers left here. That was the place of the Jedi Knights... but he wasn't a Knight.

Sak was a Shadow... and that meant his duty was to protect the Jedi order's secrets from the sith. There were numerous relics kept hidden in the vaults that could cause enormous damage to the Jedi order if they fell into the hands of the Sith... and more to the point, could make the Sith order that he was sworn to destroy all the stronger. Jedi Master Krynda Dray's killer was somewhere in the temple, he was sure of it... but although he burned to hunt that murderous filth down, his duty was clear... and he would repay his mentors poorly if he did not see to what they had trusted him to do.

Breathing hard and trying mightily to swallow his rage, he turned away. "There is no Passion, there is Serenity. There is no Chaos, there is Harmony. There is no Death, there is the Force," he muttered beneath his breath as he turned as ran through the halls, seeking after the elevator down to the lowest levels, beneath the temple proper...

And found it gone. Sak's eyes narrowed, pressing the button to call the lift... but he wasn't really surprised when it didn't come. One of the infiltrators must be down there, and he would have no doubt locked the lift. Instead, his lightsaber flashed to life, cutting through the door with ease as he wrapped one hand around the cable. Sliding down such a cord would rip most people's hands to shreds... but with the help of the force, it would be no problem. Sak began to slid down the shaft, as rapidly as he dared... seeking the vaults far below.

Criassa finished cuting thru the doors, and sliped thru the circular opening she maked, careful not to touch the glowing edges.

And stoped. Despyte her best eforts, her mouth falled open sligtly.

The famed Jedi Archives... 20.000 years of history, and colected relics of the Force. The area vas pozitively HUGE, walls after walls of electronicaly-stored works, glowing a softly diffuse blue-ish glow, on two separate floors, of the expanzive chamber. The curious part of her vanted to spend hours on hours here, exploring the wealth of knovledge. She imagined the Emperor's palace or the Sith sanctum, on Dromund Kaas, contained a similar repozitory, but she never seen it... she vas not highly enogh ranked in the Sith hierarchy yet.

At the same time thogh, she felt unnerved. The light side vas so strong here. It maked her nauseus, with the sickening sensations of serenity and peace, eroding at her finely-honed killer instinct. She vas intrigued at the same time thogh. It vas a very diferent feel of the Force, compared to all she vas used to.

"My masters wer right... the Jedi are weak, deep down. There is no way we can lose this war. But... I imagine in a place like this, you wuldnt have to worry about geting a saber in your back vhen you least expect it. That has its appeal too..." the beutiful Zeltron woman chuckled to her-self, pacing down the wide aisle, and looking around. As far as she culd see, this main area vas dedicated mostly to literary works, alongsyde statues of some Jedi lining the aisle. She culdnt sense any obvius focal-points of Force power on the upper level, either. The holocrons must have been kept in a separate area.... maybe past those three doors on the far end? She picked up her pace, the urgency of her task agen entering her mind. The longer she stayed here the more likely it was that she wuld be discovered.

Oh yes... as she aproached the doors, she culd feel the Force swirling stronger, in the chamber behind them. It culd only mean one thing; holocrons. They wer not exacly alive, but they contained the Force auras of long-dead Force users, so they projected similar to a powerful Jedi or Sith. There prezence was un-mistakeable.

Picking the middle door, she felt for any electrical currents... oh great! Mag-sealed, too. But this time, she had a way around it, noticing a computer conzone on the upper level. It probably controled the doors. Drawing on the Force, she leaped high, grabed her-self by the stone fence on the second level, and fliped over it, to land gracefuly on her feet, on the second level.

Then she aproached the console, and started working it, trying to find the door interface.

The Nautolan jedi hit the ground just a barely shy of freefall speed, reaching, reaching into the force to bleed the excess energy away even as he let go of the cable and fell into a roll, hitting the floor of the lift and then out through the door a split second later, rolling nearly twenty feet forward before his movement and the force had bled away his fall. Taking a moment to catch his breath, Sak slowly rose to his feet. The security systems in front of him were still intact, untriggered and untampered with... but there was no mistake that someone was down here.

The Jedi Shadow could sense the dark side warrior hiding within the Jedi archives. She - and he could sense the definite female sense of her now - wasn't a strong presence, but he didn't take that to mean weakness... no Sith who was weak by any definition would have been taken on this assault, even if they had survived to reach maturity in their barbaric culture. No, if her presence was small, it meant she was adept at hiding herself... unfortunately for her, on the backdrop of the pure force energy of the Jedi archives, even a tiny blot of darkness was like a splotch of ink on clear white fabric.

Unfortunately for him, if he was close enough to sense her, she was probably close enough to sense him too. The backdrop of energy was in his favor, but he wasn't as good at hiding himself as she was, even as a Shadow. She was likely to know he was coming after her.... so even as she would need to hurry, so did he.

Sak waved his hand at the security system. "System Override. Jedi Sak Mandulud." He heard a small ding as the system accepted the voice signature of a Jedi Shadow and shut down the security system for thirty seconds, allowing him to pass, then rushed forward, down the hallway to look first one way then the other, finding the glowing hole that had been cut into one of the vault doors by a lightsaber. Snarling in fury at the sith's desecration of his temple, he ran forward and leaped through the hole in a diving roll, racing towards the moving sense of the Sith infiltrator.

Criassa lifted her head from the conzole, as a suden surge of indignation catched her atention. And it was close! She narowed her focus on it... a Jedi! Somevhere on the lower level, probably folowing in her tracks. Blast it! Unfortunatly, with the stifling prezence of the holocrons in the stil-locked chamber, and the general light-aura of this place, she simply culd not pinpoint him, other then by that sense of rage/indignation... at the... yes! He was angry, at her desecrating his temple like this! How... natural. How unlike a Jedi.

"Lucky for me, or I wuldnt have even sensed him until he vas right on top of me. I'm not used to so much... white noise around me... like this." she thoght, annoyed.

He vas geting closer, racing down the aisle below... but this vas a big place. If she culd make her-self less conspicus, she wuld stand a beter chance of evading him until she got those doors open. One thing she vas very good at, as a sith Assassin, is concealing her prezence. Of corse in her case, vith the backdrop of light-side energy all around, she wuld likely stand out no mater what, if he got too close... but not of she applyed a bit of trickery! She needed a diverzion.

Vhile she had not found the door override yet, the conzole controled a whole lot of other functions on this level. She routed exces power to one of the library storage walls, on the far side of the area, causing it to sudenly flare up, vith loud electrical discharges, before exploding vith a bright electrical flash. That shuld draw his atention! She felt a litle bad for ruining all the historical records contained in it... but necessity came first. She had a job to do.

At the same time, she concealed her-self thru the Force again, like she did before vhen facing a security system. In adition to masking her vizualy, it also masked her Force prezence, especialy at range, and the Jedi stil wasnt that close. As before, she culdnt keep it for very long, another 30 seconds, but it wuld buy her more time, especialy with the Jedi on the other side of the area, investigating the power-overload.

She didnt want to have to fight this Jedi, because it wuld delay her further, and evry minute she spent here, wuld mean more chance of more Jedi coming down. This one, probably not a full Jedi Master, judging by his sense thru the Force, she culd probably take on by herself. But if any more arrived, even if more ordinary troops arrived, she wuld probably be overvhelmed. No teling if her vizitor has already reported this in, or not. A credo of Sith Assassins came to her mind: "Never fight on your prey's terms, make them fight on your own terms, and you wil know victory."

Sak felt the surging power as it burned through the circuits, but no sense of danger came with it through the force, so he thought he could ignore it. When the side panel blew, however, he flinched back, staring in awe and horror.

The Nautolan ran his fingers over the shelf, even as electricity continued to arc from one play or another every few seconds, trusting the force to keep him safe. A thousands years of knowledge... up in smoke in a second. Sak narrowed his eyes, glaring at the destroyed servers. The sith were not only going to destroy the Jedi Order in the present, if they were allowed to... they would obliterate its past, unmaking it so thoroughly that it might never have existed at all.

A low, sub-harmonious growl bubbled from his aquatic throat, too low for human ears to pick up but strong enough to make the air around him vibrate, to make the smoke quiver as it poured out of the vents. He would wipe them all out before he allowed that to happen. For Sorto. For Krynda. And for everyone else that had slaughtered.

Sak whirled, the green blade of his lightsaber blazing to life in his hands. "You'll find me much harder to remove than some data, Sith scum!" he called out in basic as he stalked forward, feeling for the dark presence he had felt earlier. It was here... but diffused, hidden. He could get a vague sense of direction - ahead - and distance - close - but not much more. In the direction he felt sure the sith was, he could see no one... but the dark presence remained. He stepped careful now, one foot steadily in front of the other, letting the living force flow through him, guide his actions and empower his awareness, trusting in its guidance...

The Jedi vas on the other side of the chamber, inspecting the destroyed column... good. 15 seconds... 10... 5... come on... YES! Despite her best eforts, Criassa's fore-head showd the sheen of sweat, as she vorked feverishly, to find the door controls on the panel, in the short time she had just buyed her-self. Just in the nick of time, as her Force effort at stealthing failed, and she had to dis-continue it.

But it vas worth it. One of the three massive doors below, hissed open, along vith the tell-tale electrical discharge, of a de-powered magnetic-seal.

And then she seen him. A Nautiloan Jedi, just coming in-to view from the oposing end of the lower level, green lightsaber ignited in his hands. And vith her stealthing effort over, he culd see her too, standing on the edge of the upper balcony, just short of the opening doors.

35-40 meters distance betwen them. There eyes met. Three seconds, at most, time needed for a Force user to cross it. She didnt hesitate.

Punching another set of keys on the conzole, to auto-seal the doors agen in 2 seconds, she stabbed her lightsaber in-to the conzole, making sure he culd not re-open the doors, then leaped-down, back to the main floor of the archive, and sprinted for the closing door. She maked it in-to the holocron chamber, literaly 1/4th of a second ahead of the door closing agen, almost catching her in the crack. She didnt look back at any point, she culd practicaly feel the Jedi's breath at her neck, and see the sheen of his green blade, behind her...

...but she vas in now! And the doors have sealed behind, separating her from her pursuer. The mag-seal came back on, too, so he wuld not just be able to cut-thru the doors, any better then she culd. That of corse, still left the kuestion, of how wuld she get out of here... but one problem at a time. For now, she had some time on her hands, and she wuld need it, to find the corect holocron. Her master, Darth Ravage, did give her a vague description of it, as wel as vhat wuld she likely sense from it... but looking around this place, and seeing dozens of holocrons on pedestals, each one of them radiating a diferent sense thru the Force... she known it wuld take some time.

She vas tempted to destroy those that wer not her target, the Sith teachings in her demanded it, not to miss this oportunity to damage the Jedi Order... but the curius part of her, the part of her that relished exploration and discovery, rebelled agenst that notion. The Sith's war vas with the Jedi, in her mind... not there history, vhich contained power that the Sith culd make use of, too. Destroying it wuld be wasteful, and pointless.

A Sith Warrior wuld have done it, vithout a second thoght. Those brutes lived for battle, destruction and death. But she vasnt one, vasnt trained as one, and didnt have that nihilistic mentality. She vas a Inquisitor. She culd apreciate vhat she seen here, and she wuld not harm any of it. Even the destruction of that one library column, she regreted, but it vas necessary.

So, he was a she. The sith infiltrator wasn't the man he had assumed, but rather a woman. Not that it really mattered... she was Sith, and lethally dangerous, and she was inside the temple he was sworn to defend. Sak all but flew across the intervening distance, even as the doors began to slam shut. He actually could have gotten one arm through the door, so close was he at the time, and maybe hit her with a stabbing lunge if he didn't get unlucky, but he would certainly lose the arm if he did, and there was no guarantee she wouldn't be able to dodge him or parry in time since he would be striking almost blind. Instead, Sak had to pull up short just as the door closed, barely stopping in time to avoid running into it with the help of the force.

The Nautolan shadow didn't spare more than a second looking on the controls... The vaults proper weren't supposed to be accessed by anyone other than a Master or one of the archivists, so he didn't know the passwords and approval keys, and even if he did there was no way anything about that panel was salvageable. Instead, he moved back a step, hesitated a second to get his placement right, and thrust his lightsaber forward.

The heavy door resisted even the energy blade, the thick security durasteel absorbing the vast energy of the blade as heat... but slowly, as the door grew orange and then red and finally white around the cutting point, the saber began to move through the metal as it yielded to the constant pressure from the determined Jedi. Sak was counting the seconds now, and every passing moment felt like an eternity... more time the infiltrator was alone in the archives, more harm she could be doing. Slowly, painfully slowly, he cut his way through the door. Maybe thirty seconds and he would be inside... a minute at the most...

Turning around, Criassa noticed a sligt shine of super-heated metal in the doors. She smirked to her-self... vas he actualy trying to cut-thru a magneticaly sealed door? She shaked her head to her-self.

"Aparently, my Jedi frend is not very smart... not to know that lightsabers are useless on a mag-sealed door." she thoght, amused, before she turned back, un-concerned, and streching out thru the Force agen, to get a deeper feel for all the holocrons in the chamber.

***

Outsyde the chamber, Sak's eforts to cut thru the doors falled short, vhen the tip of his blade burned thru enogh metal, to reach the actual electro-magnetic field permeating thru the door's structure. Just like Criassa expirience earlyer, the energy surge traveled back to his blade... alongsyde its energy structure... and in-to his hands, giving him a significant electro-shock, knocking him back.

Also... the atempt to cut thru the door it-self, trigered a security alarm. From the ceiling above, a turred slyded-out of a hidden alcove, traversing down to target Sak.

A first pair of blaster bolts come down on his pozition...

***

Meanvhile, Criassa began to sense a faint, but un-mistakable trace of a very distinct Force impression, that Darth Ravage told her to be on the lookout for, to find the corect holocron. The impression vas... diferent... from most of the other holocrons in the chamber. Almost all of the others projected the usual sense of calm and serenity, typical of most Jedi, whos teachings wer contained in them. But not this one... this one... had another facet to it.

A cold... a restless, burning cold... buryd under the surface sense of serenity.

"Interesting..." Criassa mutered, slowly aproaching the far side of the chamber, vhere one of the holocrons rested, suspended in a isolation field, on its own pedestal. It vas the sorce of that impression.

First her Jedi pursuer, angry and indignant, now this holocron, and the under-lying sense she got from it... they both painted a diferent picture of Jedi, to vhat her masters have told her to expect. A... ambiguity. A... dissonance. Not all of them wer as serene, placid and bereft of passion, as she vas teached they wer.

"Is this why Darth Ravage wants this holocron? Because it culd expoze a weakness in Jedi teachings, that we can use agenst them? Perhaps even to influence them toward the dark side? Very... clever!" the Zeltron woman speculated, trying to filter out the rest of the holocrons and focus solely on that one, trying to dig deeper, get a better feel of that... coldness... under the serenity.

She reached the pedestal, and read the name plaque, denoting the Jedi who recorded the holocron...

The Teachings Of Master Rajivari

The name didnt ring a bell for her, but that vas not suprising. Her familiarity vith long-passed Jedi masters vas limited, at best. But for the Force sense of this holocron to be so diferent from the others... he vas no typical Jedi master, she had no doubts there. And putting all that asyde... retriving this holocron vas her assignment. Once she bringed it back to Dromund Kaas, Sith alchemists and sorcerers could divine its secrets, in the security of the Emperor's palace.

Slowly, carefuly, she reached a hand, in-to the isolation field, willing the Force to flow thru it, so the field wuld mistake her for a Jedi... alowing her to grip the rectangular glowing object, and just as slowly pull it out. It felt... warm, and pulsing in her hand... but that under-lying sense of cold restlesness remained.

"Who ever and vhat-ever you are, Rajivari... you wil help us defeat your order, once and for all." Criassa vhispered sinisterly, looking at the holocron. Then she put it in the smal backpack she had on her back.

Now, to find another way out of here... her evaluative gaze raced acros the walls and ceiling, as she streched her Force-awareness out-ward. She culd sense her Jedi pursuer, stil on the other side of the sealed door, aparently in some kind of battle, from his sense of urgency... no doubt his mis-guided atempt to cut thru the mag-sealed doors activated a security system! Good... that wuld buy her some more time.
